Two Snorkel Stops, Four Hours, and a Boat Fast Enough to Beat the Crowd

Molokini Crater is a partially submerged volcanic crater, and the water inside it is shallow, sheltered, and usually clear. You board REEF EXPLORER at Ma’alaea Harbor and cross to the crater in less than 30 minutes. That speed is the whole point. Most snorkel boats take far longer to get there, which means you’re in the water while the big catamarans are still warming up their engines.

Once you’re moored inside the crater, you snorkel above coral formations and roughly 250 species of reef fish. The crater rim protects the inner bowl from most swell, so this is comfortable water for first-timers as well as experienced snorkelers. Guides are in the water with you the entire time, and all snorkel gear and flotation devices come with your ticket. Nobody has to rent anything or drag equipment to the dock.

The second stop is the one guests bring up months later. Your captain moves to a secluded turtle cove that large tour boats cannot reach, so there is no fleet anchored around you and no queue at the ladder. Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles make this cove home, and crews often spot up to a dozen at once. Swim slowly, keep a respectful distance, and let the turtles set the pace.

Food is handled throughout. Breakfast pastries and Maui Gold Pineapple come out during the crossing, lunch is a turkey wrap or a veggie sandwich with chips and granola bars, and bottled water, juice, and soda stay available all morning. Tell the crew at booking if you want the vegetarian option. Shared departures are capped at 35 guests and bookings max out at 15 travelers, so the deck never feels packed. Everyone on board must be ticketed, and every passenger must be at least 4 years old.

How the Morning Unfolds

7:30 am · Check in at Ma’alaea Harbor

Walk to the loading dock at the very end of the pier, on the ocean side next to the silver biodiesel station. The boat is yellow and docks for boarding at 7:30 am. Check in 30 minutes before departure. All seating is first come, first served, so board early if you want a particular spot on the rail. Park in Ma’alaea Harbor and pay at the secure parking signs using the QR code, then enter your license plate number. Give yourself extra time for that step.

8:00 am · Departure aboard REEF EXPLORER

The boat is a 60-foot Super Raft, Maui’s only luxury Super Raft, and the ride out is quick. You reach Molokini Crater in under 30 minutes. Breakfast pastries and Maui Gold Pineapple are served on the way, and the crew runs through the snorkel briefing before you arrive.

Molokini Crater · Snorkel and lunch

Drop into the water inside a partially submerged volcanic crater and work your way along the reef. Expect corals and hundreds of reef fish species, with visibility that holds up well in the morning hours. Lunch is served on board before you move to the second site: a turkey wrap or a veggie sandwich, plus chips and granola bars.

Turtle Cove · Private second snorkel stop

This cove is too shallow and too tight for the large tour boats, which is exactly why the turtles stay. You swim and observe the resident population of Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles in a setting with no other boats in sight. Bring an underwater camera if you own one.

12:00 pm · Return to Ma’alaea Harbor

You’re back at the same pier you left from, with the rest of the afternoon wide open. Trips and snorkel locations can change or be cancelled because of weather or other unforeseen circumstances. If the operator cancels, you choose between rescheduling and a full refund.

Good to Know Before You Book

Bring a towel. Towels are not provided, and neither is hotel pickup or drop-off, so plan your own ride to Ma’alaea Harbor. Large backpacks and luggage are not allowed on board. Non-swimmers and travelers with heart conditions or other serious medical issues should sit this one out, and a moderate level of physical fitness helps with getting in and out of the water. Vegetarian lunches are available if you request one when you book. Booking closes 2 hours before the departure time, and no-show reservations are charged in full. The boat cannot be held for late passengers, and missed trips are not refunded, so set two alarms if you are driving in from Kaanapali or Kihei. There’s a Google Maps pin for “Maui Reef Adventures – Reef Explorer” if you want turn-by-turn directions to the dock.
