Molokini and Turtle Town in One Morning
Two snorkel sites, three hours, and you are back on shore before lunch. This trip leaves from Kihei Boat Ramp on a 2025-model raft, the newest vessel of its kind on Maui, with comfortable seating and a shade area for everyone aboard. Nineteen guests max, so nobody ends up fighting for a spot at the rail when a turtle surfaces.
Sailing at 7 a.m. matters more than most travelers expect. Morning water sits glass-calm, and visibility at Molokini Crater can reach 150 feet on those days. Bring a GoPro if you own one. The crater holds more than 250 reef fish species and 38 coral species, and you can count on parrotfish, moray eels, and manta rays drifting through without much concern for the people watching them.
From there the captain runs to Turtle Town, where green sea turtles (honu) line up at their cleaning stations. Reef triggerfish, butterfly fish, and octopus share the same reef. No two trips look alike, honestly. Keep an eye out for Hawaiian monk seals, which appear every so often.
Crew members fit your mask and fins on the way out and hand you a flotation device if you want one. A short marine-life briefing covers the look-don’t-touch rules that keep these reefs healthy, and the same crew stays in the water with you at both stops.

6:30 a.m. — Check-In at Kihei Boat Ramp
Park, then walk to the boat and trailer parking area. Look for the gray and red raft named “Makena Mele II” and check in with your captain. Departure is 7:00 a.m. sharp, and late arrivals miss the boat, so plan to arrive a few minutes early rather than right on the dot.
Molokini Crater
The first snorkel stop. A partially submerged volcanic crater with water clear enough to see the bottom from the surface. More than 250 fish species live here, including parrotfish, moray eels, and the occasional manta ray. Crew fit your snorkel gear, masks, fins, flotation devices, and wetsuit tops before you get in.
Turtle Town
The second stop, and the one most guests talk about afterward. Hawaii’s green sea turtles gather at cleaning stations here, alongside reef triggerfish, butterfly fish, and octopus. Conditions vary day to day, and the Hawaiian monk seal makes the odd appearance. If weather at Molokini Crater is unpermitting, the captain reroutes to alternative snorkeling spots.
Around 10:00 a.m. — Return to Kihei Boat Ramp
Back at the dock by mid-morning, which leaves the rest of your day open for Haleakalā, beach time, or a late breakfast in Kihei.
Before You Book: The Details That Trip People Up
Check-in is 6:30 a.m. and the boat leaves at 7:00 a.m. sharp. There is no hotel pickup on this one, so you drive yourself to Kihei Boat Ramp and meet the crew at the raft. Guests must be able to walk down the dock unassisted and climb a vertical boat ladder, and the trip suits moderate-to-advanced physical activity rather than a gentle float. Weight limit is 300 pounds per person. Children under 5 cannot join, and the trip is not recommended for pregnant travelers, anyone with spinal injuries, back or neck problems, recent surgery, or poor cardiovascular health. Bring sunscreen and a towel, since neither is provided. Gratuities for the crew are cash-appreciated at the end.
