Two Snorkel Stops, a Chef in the Galley, and Sails for the Ride Home

Five hours, two snorkel sites, and a boat that leaves the dock while most of Maui is still on its first cup of coffee. You check in at Slip #56 in Ma’alaea Harbor, step aboard a custom-built 65-foot catamaran, and eat a chef-prepared buffet breakfast while the crew runs the boat out toward Molokini Crater.

Molokini is a marine preserve, and the count runs past 400 species of tropical fish plus the coral reefs they live in. A morning sailing puts you in the water before the crowds arrive, which is the whole reason this departure time exists.

Stop number two gets picked that morning, based on what the ocean is actually doing. In summer that usually means Turtle Town, where Hawaiian green sea turtles rest and swim. Winter flips the plan: humpback whales migrate through these waters, so the captain may shift course to track them instead. This is the Deluxe tour for a reason. The crew goes where the magic is that day, not where the brochure says.

Back on deck, the bar opens. Hawaiian mimosas, Aperol Spritz, Maui Brewing Co. craft beers. Few travelers know there’s a zero proof program as well, with non-alcoholic wine and beer, which is handy if you’re the one driving after the boat ties up. A generous island-style buffet lunch comes out once everyone’s rinsed off.

The last stretch is the part people talk about on the flight home. Sails go up, the trade winds take hold, and you get a genuine open-ocean sailing run back to the harbor. Itineraries, destinations and inclusions shift with the seasons and the weather, so the second stop isn’t locked in advance, and Molokini access itself is weather permitting.

How the Half Day Unfolds

1. Check in at Ma’alaea Harbor

Check-in is Slip #56 at Ma’alaea Harbor on the Oceanside Pier. Look for the signs reading “Ali’i Nui Sailing Charters.” Plan to arrive 15 minutes before departure so parking, check-in and boarding all happen without a rush. Parking runs about $1/hour and you pay it through the posted QR codes on site.

2. Breakfast on the run to Molokini

A chef-prepared buffet breakfast is served on the way out. The point of this timing is simple: you eat while the catamaran covers the distance, so you’re suited up and ready the moment the boat settles over the reef.

3. Snorkel Molokini Crater

Molokini is a world-renowned marine preserve holding over 400 species of tropical fish and coral reefs. Premium snorkel gear, flotation devices, snorkel instruction and reef-safe essentials are all included. A professional photographer works onboard and in the water, so someone else captures your group in the crater. Full-face masks are not permitted on this vessel.

4. Second snorkel stop, chosen daily

The crew selects this stop for the best conditions and marine life that morning. Summer often means Turtle Town, where Hawaiian green sea turtles rest and swim. In winter the boat may run a whale watching segment instead, tracking Maui’s migrating humpback whales. Seasonal and weather-dependent availability applies to this leg.

5. Island-style buffet lunch and open bar

After the swim, a generous island-style buffet lunch is served onboard, along with passed snacks. The open bar pours Maui Brewing Co. favorites and Hawaiian mimosas, with Aperol Spritz on the list too. Non-alcoholic wine and beer are available for anyone skipping the alcohol.

6. Sails up, back to Ma’alaea Harbor

To close out the morning, the crew raises sail and catches the trade winds for an authentic open-ocean sailing experience aboard one of Hawaii’s widest catamarans. Bow hammocks, a shaded cabin, freshwater showers and two full-size restrooms are all on board. The boat returns to the same check-in point at Slip #56.
