Molokini in the Morning, Turtles in the Afternoon

Speed across the channel from Kihei to Molokini Crater on a small-group snorkeling run where underwater visibility often tops 180 feet (55 meters). Twenty-four guests maximum share the boat, which leaves plenty of room to move around, and this military-inspired eco raft reaches the crater faster than most of the fleet. That early arrival is the whole point. You get uncrowded water while you snorkel the wildlife-rich reef, where fish, rays and other marine life live out their mornings.

Breakfast comes out on the way: warm Maui cinnamon rolls and fresh fruit, individually packaged. Later the boat slides around to the backside of Molokini Crater, a stretch hardly anyone sees, for a second snorkel in quieter water. From there you hug the South Maui coastline past the island’s most recent lava flow toward La Perouse Bay, keeping an eye out for Hawaiian spinner dolphins. The last stop is “Turtle Town,” where you swim with Hawaiian green sea turtles before a deli lunch of packaged sandwiches and chips on the ride back to Kihei.

Your Five Hours on the Water

1. Kihei Boat Ramp · Check-in and Departure

You meet at the ramp, not at a hotel lobby. Put “Kihei Boat Ramp” into Google Maps and you will land in the right place; parking is free in either of the two lots above the boat and trailer lot, then you walk down and look for the big red boat. Check-in happens 30 minutes before departure, so 6:30 AM for a 7:00 AM start. Being one of the first boats to Molokini is not marketing talk here: the raft simply gets there faster, which buys you pristine snorkel time ahead of the crowd.

2. Molokini Crater · 120 Minutes

Skip over the waves to the crater and drop in on a reef loaded with tropical fish, rays and other wildlife. Visibility often reaches 180 feet (55 meters), and as the first boat on site the water around you stays quiet. Continental breakfast is served here while you dry off. Need a breather between snorkels? Stretch out on the comfy pontoons and soak up the sun. When the group is ready, the captain moves to the backside of Molokini Crater for a second in-water session at a spot most visitors never get to see.

3. South Maui Coastline and La Perouse Bay · Pass By

On the way to the final snorkel site, the raft hugs the Maui coastline and passes the island’s most recent lava flow on the run toward La Perouse Bay. That bay is natural habitat for the Hawaiian spinner dolphin, so keep a camera within reach and scan the surface. Nothing scheduled here beyond looking, though spotting a pod is the kind of thing people talk about for years.

4. “Turtle Town” · 60 Minutes

Jump in and swim with Hawaiian green sea turtles in the water they actually live in. Guides stay with you and can help with mask fit, fins and confidence if this is your first time snorkeling. Once everyone is back on board, deli lunch is handed out: individually packaged sandwiches and chips, with soda and bottled water available, before the boat turns toward Kihei.

Before You Book: Practical Notes

  • Show up early. Arrive 30 minutes before departure. That is 6:30 AM for the 7:00 AM start, and the boat does not wait.
  • Everyone must climb a vertical ladder to re-board the boat after snorkeling. It is the one physical requirement that surprises people most.
  • Age range is 8 to 65. Contact the operator directly if you need an exception for someone outside those ages.
  • Not recommended for pregnant travelers, guests with poor cardiovascular health, spinal injuries, or anyone who struggles with seasickness. The raft is fast and the channel can be choppy.
  • Moderate fitness helps. Due to the adventurous nature of the trip, it is not recommended for elderly or fragile guests.
  • No hotel pickup included. Meet everyone at Kihei Boat Ramp; you will return to the same spot five hours later.
